NAPLAN 2026 Results Are Out: One In Three Students Still Missing Key Benchmarks

The 2026 NAPLAN results are in, and the numbers tell a story every Australian parent should pay attention to. Nearly 1.2 million students sat the tests in March, and the national picture shows only small gains in some year levels and a slide backward in others.

Reading And Writing Scores Slipped, Numeracy Held Steady
Reading and writing scores were lower across every year level compared to 2025. Numeracy told a slightly different story: Years 5, 7 and 9 improved a little, but Year 3 numeracy dropped to its lowest average in four years. Testing also shifted from May to March this year, which education researchers say makes year-on-year comparisons trickier.
Where You Live Still Shapes The Results
Victoria came out on top nationally for the second year running, beating every other state in writing and numeracy. Education researcher Trisha Jha pointed to a simple reason: Victoria has no remote or very remote communities, and that geography gives it an edge other states cannot match.
The gap between city and remote schools is stark. In reading, 70% of major city students rated as strong or exceeding, against just 23.1% of very remote students. The same pattern showed up in numeracy almost exactly.
Girls Ahead In Writing, Boys Ahead In Numeracy
Girls outperformed boys in writing at every single year level. Boys, on the other hand, generally came out ahead in numeracy. It is a gender split that has shown up in NAPLAN data for years now.
What's Actually Working
Federal Education Minister Jason Clare pointed to two Victorian schools, Highvale Primary and Burwood Heights Primary, as proof that explicit teaching pays off. Highvale saw a 25% jump in Year 3 students exceeding at reading since 2023, and an 11.3% rise in Year 5. Burwood Heights recorded similar gains.
Sunshine Primary in Victoria's west told a similar story. The school introduced phonics back in 2019, before it was even mandated in the state, and has since seen big lifts in Year 5 reading and numeracy. The common thread across every improving school: early, structured, evidence-based teaching, and small-group support for kids who are falling behind.

The research keeps pointing to the same answer: regular, structured practice beats last-minute cramming. Practice tests do not just check what a child knows, they actively reinforce the learning itself, because retrieving an answer under exam-like conditions locks it into memory far better than re-reading notes ever does.
